History of Can Opener
The first tin can made of solid iron was invented by a British merchant
Peter Durand in 1810. In 1813, John Hall and Bryan Dorkin opened the
first commercial canning factory in England. With the invention of tin
cans and canned food, the need of cane opener was also elevating.
Later cans were made with thinner materials and in 1858, Ezra Warner of
Waterbury patented the first can opener. It contained a large curved
blade that was driven into a can's rim and then forcibly worked around
its edge. William Lyman patented the first household can opener that is
used today. This opener consist of a cutting wheel that rolls around the
rim. A modified design with serrated rotation wheel was later introduced
by Star Can Company of San Francisco in 1925. An electric version of the
same was introduced in December 1931.
