History of Cutlery
The development of
cutlery has paralled mankind's
progress throughout history. The journey of cutlery begins in the Stone
age with axes, knives and spearheads made of fragments of hard stones
such as flint.
Cutlery gets its name from the term for a person skilled in making
knives, a cutler. The Worshipful Company of Cutlers was one of the
London livery companies, reflecting the importance of this trade in the
Middle Ages.
The development of cutlery began with the introduction of knives,
spoons and forks.
- Knives came into existence in 2000 B.C.
Earliest knives were made of copper and bronze.
- Spoons came along 5000 B.C., earlier made of
stone and clay.
- Later in the 9th century forks came into
existence, thus adding onto the list of cuttlery.
Cutlery became more popular as table settings among the lower
classes at the end of medieval times, when it became trendy for people
to entertain by hosting dinner parties. Food was considered only to be a
means of existence but later it turned out to be a reason of social and
personal gatherings. Thereafter, the use of cutlery was widespread
specially among high class people and then slowly the emergence of
cutlery spread out in the global market, both for commercial and
personal use.
