Espresso Makers

Espresso maker is a coffee maker that forces live steam under pressure through dark roasted coffee grounds. It is one of the most efficient and quicker way to prepare espresso coffee for instant energy.

The espresso machine use steam to force the water through the grounds instead of a pump and only generate about 3 atmospheres or bars of pressure. They also heat the water too much which scalds the coffee.

History of Espresso Maker
  • Espresso coffee was discovered by a goat herder who noticed that goats had an extreme boost of energy after they consume red berry growing from shrubs.
  • A tired, hungry traveler witnessed this and he tried eating the same red berry and found he was boosted with energy. He then developed the espresso coffee.
  • The first espresso coffee maker is said to have originated in Italy in 1901 by Italian manufacturing company owned by Lugia Bezzer.
  • He introduced while he was simply looking for a way to help speed up his employee's coffee breaks.
  • He figured out that if pressure was applied in the brewing process, the drink could be made in a lot less time.
Types of Espresso Maker
There are basically five types of espresso machines that can be grouped into the following categories:
  • Manual Espresso Maker : This machine uses a lever that is operated manually to force the water through the grounds. It allows the user to have a greater control over how the espresso is made.
  • Semi-Automatic Espresso Maker : This machine allows addition of coffee manually and then the pump starts and stops when the user pushes the brew button.
  • Full Automatic Espresso Maker : This machine is operated electrically and the user presses a switch and the machine automatically functions.
  • Super-Automatic Espresso Maker : This machine is operated electrically and automatically grinds the espresso beans, tamps it into a puck, doses the proper amount of water and discards the puck into an internal dump box.
The Espresso Coffee Makers can also be classified as:
  • Stovetop Espresso Maker : It is also known as macchinetta. It works by heating water to create pressure, the pressure then forces the water quickly through the coffee grounds, resulting in espresso coffee.
  • Countertop Espresso Maker : These brew coffee by various methods.
The most common methods used are:
  • Steam Method : The inside of the machine is pressurized with steam needed to force water through the coffee grounds.
  • Pump Method : This will pump water automatically into a tank to build up enough pressure to force water through the grounds.
  • Piston Style Method : This is an ideal method for brewing coffee. This machine uses manual force to store up the pressure needed to force water through the coffee grounds. The machine works manually by the use of a lever connected to a spring loaded piston.
