Most measuring cups have two scales on them. It is normally labeled in
cups and ounces. The side marked in cups is labeled with fractions.
Types of Measuring Cups
Measuring cups are mainly classified as :
- Graduated Measuring Cups - Measuring cups that
resemble small pots. They are usually made of plastic or metal and
are excellent for measuring dry ingredients because they can easily
be leveled off. They are used to measure dry ingredients, such as
flour, sugar, oats, rice and solid ingredients, such as shortening
and peanut butter.
- Liquid Measuring Cups - Measuring cups that
look like little pitchers. They are widely available in 1-, 2-, 4-
and 8-cup measures. They come in glass or plastic, with the amounts
indicated in cups, ounces, and milliliters. Pyrex is a good brand.
The larger measures can double as mixing bowls.

- Stainless Steel - These are substantial
measuring cups with prominent level of marking.
- Glass - Sturdy glass measuring cups feature
easy-to-read measuring increments on both sides. They're microwave,
oven and dishwasher safe.
- Aluminum - These ensure easy cleaning and are
sturdy with prominent level of markings.
There are Several Other Types of Measuring Cups :
- Adjustable measuring cups are used to measure
dry and solid ingredients. The cup has a slide bar that can be
adjusted so the cup can measure different amounts.
- Cylinder type measuring cup is handy for
measuring solids, such as shortening and peanut butter.
- Angled measuring cups are also available, which
are designed to provide easily viewable levels so that measured
amounts can be readily viewed.
